Cormac Cullinan’s vision calls for a fundamental shift in how humanity relates to Antarctica: he advocates recognising the continent as an autonomous legal entity with rights equivalent to a nation. Home to emperor and Adélie penguins, leopard and Ross seals, orcas, beaked whales, and albatrosses, Antarctica, must be granted legal standing.
This vision has earned him the prestigious Shackleton Medal, which is awarded to individuals who demonstrate “courage, determination, ingenuity and leadership” in protecting the polar regions.
In an interview, Cullinan says the award will help raise critical awareness of the Antarctica Declaration: “It brings the initiative to public attention far faster than we could have achieved alone and connects us with a network of polar experts we may be able to engage.”
