On 28 April 2022, the Wild Law Institute hosted a workshop at the Sustainability Institute to chart a new way forward for conservation in South Africa. This is based on a vision of Harmonious Coexistence, where humans live in community with other species, recognise their intrinsic value, contribute to the ecological health and integrity of the planet, and respect the rights of nature and all species. This is guided by indigenous knowledge systems from across South Africa and the continent.

The workshop was attended by 25 conservationists, indigenous knowledge practitioners, environmental lawyers, and activists. This workshop is the start of a longer process of achieving this vision in South Africa and the region more broadly.
