In order to celebrate and protect the beautiful continent we know as Antarctica, the surrounding waters and its community of life; we are part of the movement supporting the existing Draft Declaration for the Rights of Antarctica. This declaration aims to establish a new eco-centric vision to guide people’s interaction with – and responsibilities toward – Antarctica for centuries to come.
This groundbreaking initiative recently gained recognition when Cormac Cullinan was awarded the 2025 Shackleton Medal for his pioneering work on the Antarctic Rights initiative. At the heart of this movement lies a revolutionary vision: recognizing Antarctica as a rights-bearing entity that can defend its own future in court. This vast ice continent, the remaining bastion of untouched wilderness on Earth, stands as the powerful emblem of a transformative approach to environmental stewardship.
The initiative comprises an alliance of scientists, Indigenous representatives, heritage representatives, non-governmental organizations, explorers, lawyers, communicators, and key players working together to make this vision a reality.
