Fellow

Lesai is an Earth Jurisprudence fellow and writer with the Wild Law Institute. An environmental lawyer by training and practice, he has been involved in various strategic climate and environmental litigation.

His ongoing contribution includes strategic research and application of innovative governance structures for communities and places implementing Rights of Nature. In furtherance of this work, Lesai is part of the executive committee of the Antarctic Rights Alliance and runs a Daily Maverick column on Antarctic Governance from a Rights of Antarctica perspective.  He is also involved in one of the first initiatives in South Africa directed at enabling land to own itself, as part of the Bergplaas Nature Reserve collective.

He credits his love for the environment to a lifelong sense of wonder about the natural world and in furtherance of this, is developing a thesis for the legal personhood of (nonhuman) animals.
